The quiet barriers that push girls out of class

Learners and education support context in Western Kenya

Education is often described as free in Kenya. For many girls in Western Kenya, the real barrier is everything that still has to be paid, carried or endured before a desk is usable. This insight sets out the evidence, Vision Giver's response and how partners can fund the first phase.

The problem

School continuity for girls is shaped by household poverty, unpaid care work, pregnancy and marriage pressure, stigma and the practical cost of uniforms, books, lunch and exam fees. Sensitisation alone does not keep a learner enrolled when the next term's charges arrive.

42.5% Out-of-school girls in a Siaya study cited pregnancy, marriage or childcare as a reason for dropout
42.5% In the same study, the same share cited financial reasons such as fees or needing to work
~21% Siaya teenage pregnancy rate reported from KDHS 2022 coverage in county reporting

These figures describe regional and study contexts. They are not Vision Giver's own school-level baseline. Partner reporting will move from published evidence to verified learner lists and attendance records.

The human impact

Illustrative scenario informed by published research and community context

A girl finishes the term with strong marks, then stays home the next opening week because the family cannot raise money for uniform, books or lunch. Another returns after pregnancy and meets teasing in class, with no reliable childcare. A third is needed for farm work or sibling care before dawn.

Repeated interruptions to schooling can affect learning continuity, confidence and educational progression. For some girls, these pressures compound other barriers to remaining in school.

This vignette is illustrative, not a named case study. Named stories will be published only with consent and safeguarding review.
