Protecting children where poverty and silence meet

6 min read · Vision Giver Project field insight · Siaya & Kakamega

Community context for child and family wellbeing in Western Kenya

Orphaned and vulnerable children in Siaya and Kakamega need more than food parcels. They need safety, adult guidance, school continuity and communities willing to act when harm is hidden. This insight sets out the evidence base and a clear partnership ask.

The problem

Poverty, caregiving strain, teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and weak local response systems can leave children exposed. Silence inside families and schools often delays help until damage is already deep.

~46-56% National VACS-linked reporting: large shares of girls and boys experience at least one form of childhood violence
25.2% Lifetime sexual violence prevalence reported for females in childhood (Kenya VACS-linked analysis)
Local pressure Siaya and Kakamega programmes repeatedly flag teenage pregnancy, SGBV and early marriage risks

National and county figures establish risk context. They are not Vision Giver case counts. Safeguarding-sensitive local baselines will guide partner reporting.

The human impact

Illustrative scenario informed by published research and community context

A child living with already stretched relatives may eat irregularly, miss school charges and have no trusted adult to tell when harm happens. Another girl leaves class after pregnancy and meets stigma instead of support. Without counselling, school continuity and community action, silence becomes the default.

Protection work must avoid sensational claims. The point is practical: early support, safe referral and education continuity reduce the chance that one crisis becomes a lifelong setback.

Why this matters

What Vision Giver is doing

Vision Giver Project is a community-based organisation in Kakamega County, Kenya, presented in our materials as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). Review our organisational profile and confirm registration particulars before contracting. See also PBORA.

Protection is paired with education support and caregiver strengthening. We work through schools, self-help groups and local leaders rather than treating harm as an isolated case file.
